1989 Gigography of Paul Clarke

PaulyGigography ≫ 1989

Getting there with my gigography now, every gig I remember going to, from 1987 up to about now. It's an obvious step from my Best gigs of all time post. Well that's the theory, so there's A LOT missing. I have added details from the big bag of old gig tickets that I gathered while I was in London, + a box of old concert tickets + things from Mum + Dad's loft. Also got lots of gaps regarding festival lineups, they'll probably stay missing, it's so hard to remember. There's a stack missing where I've lost tickets or never had them, most of the guestlist actions during my NME + Popex years and that. Yeah I know it's a bit nerdy, let's let that go though, I'm having fun remembering these things. At least I've not started scanning the tickets in yet Of course I have scanned the tickets now[^So I've lost the bag of tickets before I scanned them all in!]...

The Primitives @ Forum

Was the Town & Country still then, Pale Saints supported again, and Fatima Mansions too I think.…

The Primitives @ Portsmouth Guildhall

Plus the Pale Saints.I later went on to work with the lead singer of the Pale Saints at nme.com, was WEIRD telling him I had got him to sign a poster or something for me at this gig.We followed the Primitives to their London date a few days later.…

Under Neath What @ The Marquee

Just found out the date of this from an ebay listing for the limited single they gave away at the gig! I went to loads of Under Neath What gigs so I don't have evidence for many of them...Met Bam from Dogs D'Amour at this gig I think.…

Motley Crue @ Wembley Arena

Plus Skid Row, White Lion and Lemmy... All the acts got together to play "Jailhouse Rock". This was also the gig of the awesome rotating drumkit.…

Andy Warhol Exhibition @ Royal Festival Hall

I have a programme for an Andy Warhol exhibition that I remember going to in the Southbank Centre. No idea what date, must have been a weekend I suppose. The exhibition was on from the 7th September to the 5th of November. Not a gig, doesn't belong here, so might help me in future to eliminate dates when gigs could not have been. I have some old cinema tickets that I might log here for the same reason!…

Dogs D'Amour @ Portsmouth Guildhall

plus Under Neath What. The Errol Flynn tour.Friend Adam was a big fan so we went to London to see UNW a few days later, possibly the Marquee, prob'ly the Astoria...Who buys a programme for a gig? I did, in 1989!This ticket could be more or less anything couldn't it? However on the original I can just make out it is for this gig.…

UKCAC 89 @ ULU

Was on for two days^Actually three days according to the wikipedia entry...]. Instead of getting a hotel overnight we went to all night [cinema at The Scala (when it was still a cinema) + saw Akira, Heavy Metal, Fritz The Cat, Swamp Thing and prob'ly more...I got lots of skect ecthes of 2000ad characters from artists like Carlos Ezquerra and Ron Smith at this one + bought loads of rubbish comics.I originally had it that I was here in 1990 + 1991, so on finding the Carlos Ezquerra skect ecth which is dated it reminds it must have been 1989 + 1990.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_Comic_Art_Convention…

Transvision Vamp @ Portsmouth Guildhall

Was this the time I threw my pants at the stage? Think it must have been, this is the first of two times I went to see them. For a long time I'd this down as being 12th June, so this ticket says the 13th June.…

WASP @ Portsmouth Guildhall

The ticket is very faded, but I confirmed the date with an old Kerrang... Zed Yago supported, this is the "89 + Headless" (The Headless Children) tour.I met guitarist Chris Holmes after the gig, loitering by the stage door (me, not him) + got my t-shirt signed. I wonder if I still have it?The site says REM played there only two days before, I did pick the gigs to go to...Can barely make out this ticket so it is for this gig:I told you I met Chris Holmes! Still can't find the t-shirt though.…

Anthrax @ Hammersmith Odeon

plus Living Colour. My first proper gig, went up on a coach trip. See the Anthrax / Judge Dredd patches on my denim jacket \m/Bought the tickets in person from a ticket agent advertised in the evening paper, he was most perplexed to have a customer turn up in person, better used to dealing with people over the phone or through the post (no internets in those days). This ticket is the most faded of all so it's definitely the one:Just found a merchandising flyer from the gig which reminds me, I bought a pair of Anthrax bermuda shorts.…
