Blog ≫ 2015 ≫ Clarke marriage licenses in Hampshire

Some familiar names in here1 needs more going through, but it looks a great resource... for starters:

Clarke, Samuel of Chalton, yeoman, 19, b. with c. of his f. William Clarke, & Mary Dash of East Meon, 17, sp. with c. of her f., William Dash of E.M., yeoman, 19 Oct 1758

Translating I assume that is Samuel Clarke of Chalton, yeoman, 19 years old, with consent of his father William Clarke, marrying Mary Dash of East Meon with the consent of her father William Dash of East Meon, yeoman, on the 19th Oct 1758.

I see William Clarke marrying Mabel Baghurst in there too. Great that I can browse through it online... here they are:

CLARKE, William, of East Meon, yeoman & Mabel Baghurst of Clanfield, sp, at C, Chalton, or Buriton, 1 Sep 1726

Another interesting one is

CLARKE, Randall, of East Meon, yeoman, b, & Elizabeth Pinke, of the s, 21, sp at E. M., Porchester, or Southwick, 1 June 1736

I have heard Randall Clarke appears in our [tree](/wiki/#family/tree), and I have seen Randall as a surname - I think the forename of this Randall was taken from the surname of his grandfather or someone else on his mother's side.

Not all of the Clarkes are in there, I wonder what the rule is? Is it only catholics or something? Aha, it's only those who preferred to pay for a licence rather than by the banns in church:

Marriage by licence was usually associated with wealthier people (but not necessarily so) who wanted to avoid marriage by banns which involved a church announcement of the intention to marry on three successive Sundays. Instead, the bridegroom had to swear a declaration that no impediment existed for the marriage to take place.
