Blog ≫ 2011 ≫ James CLARKE of East Meon

Wondering if this page of East Meon baptisms might have some connection with our James CLARKE. I misremembered the date of birth and thought "1777 that must be ours!" but we have 1779. The name James Clarke is too common for me to leap to a conclusion...

I was led to this by an old email:

With reference to James Clarke. I have found a James Clarke born c.1777 in East Meon. A son of Mary and John Clarke, who I believe is a descendant of Samuel Clarke and Mary Randall. The head of the tree from Anne Griffiths. I think John maybe the son of William Clarke and Mabel Baghurst. If you look at the website for East Meon Parish records you will see the children of John and Mary spread over 2 eras. If you look at the entry for 1755 to 1774 you will see they are 'of South Farm'. The same farm as Samuel and Mary Randall lived. Also it mentions a William and Jane 'of Parke', if you look at a street map of East Meon and find South Farm, you will see Parke Farm above it. John and Mary also had a son named Randal Clarke. Brothers and sisters of John Clarke married as follows, Samuel Clarke married a Mary Dash, Katherine Clarke married a Henry Dash.

Do you think that this could be the 'James' we are looking for?

I have copies of the wills of the 1st Samuel Clarke and his son William Clarke if you are interested.

The name Dash crops up in our tree too.

πŸ’¬ The more I revisit this the more I am convinced our James Clarke 1779 is this James Clarke 1777
