Blog2024 ≫ Biggish roundish gigiversary today

Exactly thirty-five years ago, this day in 1989 I saw The Primitives at Southampton Joiners. OK, not that big, but early in my gigging history, and a round number in that it's a multiple of five. I don't have many "thirty-five years ago today" messages. My first time at the Joiners, first of many, and The Primitives past their peak, but still good. I still have an ashtray in my study taken from the pub that night, signed by the band. It was a clean unused ashtray, not a dirty one swiped from a table 1.

Also Gorky's Zygotic Mynci today in 1995 and I think I was quite ill that day too, maybe it's something about this time of year for me? I will check blog history for previous mentions of being ill. I think I'm never ill, but Clare says I seem to say "I'm never ill, but..." quite a lot.

Also David Devant today in 1996, also at Southampton Joiners.

David Devant And His Spirit Wife poster from Southampton Joiners 2

  1. No this wasn't the past-their-prime show at the Joiners, this was when they were big enough to play Portsmouth Guildhall. The Joiners show was in 1991. The band's peak was in 1988 when they released Crash, this tour was supporting the second album Pure
  2. Looks like I first added this scanned poster in 2020, that's why this post is being tagged with 2020.

I have seen Primitives probably on three occasions; Portsmouth Guildhall ('89), Kentish Town Forum ('89), + Southampton Joiners (1991), though I still have some bragging tagging to do so this may go up.
