Blog2024 ≫ At last a hostel story (and updated list)

Hostel adventure time again! And at last a hostel story! Not a big story, but at least something notable happened. Well sort of. Starting at the beginning, commuted as normal, the way in part anyway. Clare had made me sandwiches for lunch, very nice. Then we finally opened the dried duran fruit that I brought back from Malaysia. Everyone hated it, but it gave us all a laugh.

After work back to the original hostel, to Generator, just to check in. Finally got the lower bunk that I'd been requesting, and they put me on the ground floor. Not noisy though, through several doors from bar and reception. I made my bed and left a couple of bits there.

Walked to Islington and the vegetarian buffet I had seen before. Time to enjoy it this time, so I got four good plates of different curries and salads. A busy popular place, I liked it and would use it again. It's not fancy but was very tasty. They don't have a license for booze, you can bring your own for free, but I was not drinking. Instead I availed of the "detox waters", really just water with a hint of turmeric, a hint of other things. Still better than nothing, and all for less than a tenner.

Next to the cinema, to see The Substance. Didn't really like it, more of a horror film than I was expecting, and all a bit noisy. I can see it is good, but it's not what I wanted to watch really. There's nothing but horror on at the moment though, getting close to Halloween.

Back to the hostel at close to midnight, and try to go to sleep. There are lights on, but I'm used to this. One other guest was not though, he got out of bed to have a go at the guy on the bunk above mine. Didn't he know the rule about lights and devices off by 11pm? I did not know this, I'm not sure it is a thing. Anyway the asker (New Zealander I think) persuaded the askee (French) to turn off and so everyone could go to sleep. Until 2.45am that is when a massive fire alarm went off. Everyone sat up, the French guy actually jumped out of bed and went out of the room, but everyone else moved very slowly. We were on the ground floor, near a fire escape, could not hear running or screaming, so surely a false alarm. French guy came back to the room and got back into bed, so I settled down again. That was the hostel story. Did I build it up too much?

I didn't sleep well, so left the hostel about six this time, showered at work and really started working then too.

Again I saved £80ish by not getting train tickets, then £25 this week on hostel, £10 on theatre comedy, £10 on dinner, £2 on some juice this morning.

More this week, my most expensive week maybe? But a better dinner. I remembered the water from work, but there were no drinks, so I just didn't have an extra drink.

Maybe slightly updated packing list (based on my big packing list) for next time. Quite prepped in advance for next time actually. Latest packing list version will always be here, but I will paste updates over time.

Free Octopus Energy 9 tomorrow over lunchtime, three hours of it, lovely.

  1. This picture says "fully licensed" but it is not, you do bring your own booze, if you want booze. I was not drinking this day.
  2. Booked in advance for next week to get a better price.
  3. Towels provided in work showers, got my small one as a backup, but it's already at work.
  4. I have a set at work but like to have one in my tote bag too.
  5. Already at work.
  6. Bought better ones, not used yet.
  7. Didn't even eat a snack bar this week! So got spare for next week.
  8. Removed the charging leads, as battery pack has it built in.
  9. Join Octopus Energy here and we both earn money.
