Blog2022 ≫ Facing up to the idea that the Cologne trip might be off

Third time of trying to book a pre-christmas trip like this, and the third time it's going to be cancelled. It's strike related this time really, though we're still waiting to see what happens. We'll lose money for sure, but how much? If we don't go then the hotels can still be cancelled (they can be cancelled can't they?) but the overseas train tickets are lost. The Eurostar tickets though, what happens there? We have already rescheduled twice, I suspect we'll have to do the same again. Even though it's "free amendments", each time I've had to amend I've had to move to a more expensive time slot, so it's costing me a couple of hundred quid each time. So not only will I not get any money back if we cancel this trip, but I'll have to pay out more money for the privelege of not going!

I would have to pay out more money if we went, I don't think we've paid for the hotels up front. That would be a lovely treat if we have actually. Nope just checked and we had not, so I'd have about a grand to pay out if we did go.

We had already booked an extra night in Brussels, as a way of mitigating problems caused by Eurostar. We were being bold and saying "it'll be fine, we've got somewhere to stay and we can figure out getting home the next day"... but the next day there are also problems. So now we're getting close to christmas itself. So we're probably going to have to cancel it.

Have not told the boys yet, they will be gutted.
