Blog2019 ≫ Robbed at the Chambers quiz

Went early to the Chambers quiz on Sunday in order to bag a table. Was even less busy than I thought it might be, so I had the pick of the place and found a good one for six near the temporary real ale bar. Nice spot in the corner, I can see the room, there's a light, I brought my book and settled down with a couple of halves thinking I'd have an hour on my own before anyone else arrived. Other friends were also early so the evening started, with no book being read.

The good points first; There were still eleven out of twelve of the festival ales on, and drinking sensibly in halves we managed to try everything. Also we did better in the quiz than we have done for a while. At half time we were in first place, and I was feeling very confident. Generally we're mid table and this point and then we pick it up on the background music round. I know we'd done well on the background music so we were going to ace this, and the big cash prize was already spent. However when it came to the final tally another team overtook us. The very team that we had seen using mobile phones to look up the answers. "Don't worry" I said "people who use mobile phones in pub quizzes don't usually win", as I think not knowing the etiquette, the basic decency, means they also don't know what they don't know and may be overconfident with other answers. Not this time though. We were absolutely robbed, and at least one of our party vows never to return to Chambers again. Not sure what landlord Chris could have done about it, except maybe to miscount their score.

So, a bad taste at the end. Or there would have been if we'd not enjoyed the rest of the evening so much.
