I thought the headlights were a bit ineffective - the loose earth that I found while investigating the wiper motor was for the main beam, so only the sidelights were coming on previously. So now got bright lights again but it did not fix the wipers... I will call an electrician today. He says (via the friend who is putting me in touch) that it's definitely going to be a dodgy earth. I can't see one that looks wrong but hopefully he can trace it quickly. The Beetle is running nicely, I've got used to how it drives again. I even drove the Peugot again yesterday and found it ok.
