Cancer. I'm sure I'd heard he was ill, Clare had no idea, and was hoping we'd get to see him one more time.
On Radio 4 just now they called him the voice of a generation, he was more than that surely? He's been around for ever, and was a significant force in more than one generation. But no more, unless this is just the next phase in his career.
Think I saw him three times. First time at Wembley at the Freddie Mercury concert, where I was annoyed at him doing a prayer during proceedings. Next time probably Glastonbury, about 2000, which was great, and then again in Manchester at Old Trafford which was also great! He was great wasn't he? Great.
I had tickets once to his Royal Festival Hall show which would have been more than great. But didn't go. I bought the tickets in a frenzy, of course we have to go to this, but it turned out to be Glastonbury weekend, when we'd be seeing him anyway, so gave the tickets away.
RIP David Bowie.
