Second Sainsbury's mobile customer support person (also Scottish, also very helpful) said you can only try this five times, and I probably tried the original PIN that Virgin sent that many times, so I might have permanently locked the phone. I'm trying Sony support, and then also trying leaving it powered off for an hour before retrying, then also leaving it powered off for 24 hours before trying again, but it might be dead, so I'll need a new handset.

This one might be a permanent remote control for the media centre and home automation from now on.

That's at least 100 up the spout, negating my mobile phone contract switching savings for a while...
