Blog2026 ≫ School night comedy

No idea what happened on Monday. I wasn't on call or anything, no late night working, no going out, I don't think anything happened. Tuesday though, full of excitement. We both commuted in, and as we had our pick of seats on the train we did not sit together. Wife likes to sit in a two by the window and sleep, I like to sit at a table, so we did. Full busy day of work in London, then I left early to head to Kensington. Such a slow journey round the circle line and then I messed up by missing my stop and had to double back. Eventually got to High Street Kensington and walked to pub to meet wife.

We had picked The Devonshire arms as a) it was a pub, b) it did food, c) real ale and not a shit brewery, d) it was the sister pub of The Queens Arms, which was fully booked. Was quieter than I expected when I got there, and my first choice of beer was off. Not a good start, but I can forgive the quietness as it was not quite half five yet, and second beer was OK. Then wife arrived, having already checked in at our hotel, and we got food. Food ok, I had harissa cauliflower and she had chicken Milanese, and we figured we had time to go to a better pub before out big night of comedy.

Walked to The Queens Arms, it was very busy indeed. My first beer was actually rank, I had to change it, which meant a long wait for it, so much so we had to leave again before finishing it. The place was emptying out, everyone was heading to the Albert Hall, so we did too.

Good venue but not such good bar action, we got expensive ciders and headed to our seats. Teenage Cancer Trust comedy night, comedians all supposedly chosen by Robert Smith. The compere was Dom Joly and he did some of his greatest hits too between the other acts. First on was Miles Jupp who was OK, being a slightly confused posh man really. Gentle mirth. Then I can't really remember the order of the other comedians, Bridget Christie and Athena Kugblenu were in this bit, Bridget very funny, Athena quite funny. Then maybe Jack Dee to finish the first half, also very funny, him being grumpy, him doing his thing, but still good. Everyone only had about fifteen minutes so had to squeeze their sets in a bit.

Next an interval where wife paid over thirty quid for two wines, lovely. Then back to seats for Dara Ó Briain, Andy Hamilton, Maisy Adam, and finally Stewart Lee. Andy Hamilton a bit gentler than I expected, but the others excellent. Stewart did mostly stuff we've seen before, but it's greatest hits for charity, more than fair. He's so good we wish he could have done longer.

Back to our hotel, then me up early for a short commute to work. Wife laying in for some half hearted shopping. My work very busy indeed. I have tomorrow off so that's good.

Was really cold today felt actually wintery again.

Pay day in two days, premium bonds prize day a week after that. I heard that we will be getting a bonus from work, but that's pay day after next.

Wow was The Darkness really a year ago today?

Partly cloudy and a moderate breeze, 2 - 10℃.
