Blog2026 ≫ I get up when I want, when parkrun is cancelled

I heard a rumour parkrun would be cancelled in the week. There's maintenance going on on The Leas to fix up the landslips of a couple of years ago. Folkestone parkrun were working on a new route right up this end of The Leas, but they needed it to be ratified by Parkrun HQ. What will happen? I think I already spoiled it with the headline.

Friday not much going on. We never did go to Chaos Cards in the end as wife suddenly remembered she had the dentist and so needed the car. So I checked with friends, could they make it to the pub even earlier? They could, so we had a wet walk into Hythe and the Potting Shed, for a nice relaxing afternoon. Saw another parkrunner in there who said yeah, definitely cancelled. His running club were supposed to be taking over and doing pacing and so on, but all off, and possibly off for weeks. A nice sit and chat apart from that, catching up with friend who has been on holiday for four weeks, and plotting potential future trips. Other friend's wife is off on a cruise in July so he's free for a trip like our trip to Belgium that time.

We were also talking about how annoyed with are with AI and with recommendation algorithms, because we're interesting like that. This spurred me on to remove google recommend from my phone. This is the thing where when I'm bored I can slide the screen to one side and get latest recommended articles for me. I don't "like" stuff and I try to play against the algorithms, blocking cookies and so on so it's not usually super useful for me but I does know I like camper vans and pocket knives and it thinks I like guitars and bikes too. Anyway blocked now, another step away from the modern internet. I blocked it on my friend's phone too, with his permission.

Then, quarter past five, my phone went and I had to join a call at work. Same situation as Monday, getting to the end of the day needing support from the on call people, one of whom was me. A different underlying situation though, just unlucky. Had to discuss plans, what do do if something happened over the weekend. So I did this call in the tiny corridor to the toilet at the back of the Potting Shed. Think I got away with it. So definitely no extra pint, and on to a curry instead. And no beer with the curry. Got a taxi back at nine, wife assumed I'd been in the pub all this time but NO, HA!

T1 had been at a party, wife was going to pick him up at eleven. I did not let on that I was fine to drive and could have done it.

My alarm went off anyway for parkrun this morning, which she was not happy about. Well I could have been going to Dover, and I should have really, but I did not. I turned the alarm off but could not get back to sleep so got up and did some investigation on the work issue. Did some good work improving a dashboard, but cannot claim overtime for this bit really. Think I can claim a few hours though which will be handy when it comes in.

Saturday not a lot going on then, mostly sitting. Think wife is taking T2 to Chaos Cards, then he's rushing back to meet a friend, we'll watch rugby and follow the Pompey game online at the same time, and then get a curry later. Two in a row for me!

Drizzle and a moderate breeze, 10 - 12℃.
