Blog2026 ≫ One of my favourite gigs was thirty-five years ago today

The Revolting Cocks at London Astoria, today in 1991. Thirty-five flipping years ago!

Hmm would it still be one of my favourite gigs if I were to think them through carefully today? Maybe I should run through all my gigs and give them a rating and work it out. These things get a bit biased towards trends though don't they.

There would have to be weighting for how exclusive the gig was, how unlikely it is to be replicated, how good the venue is, and this scores well there. No idea if this band would play again, no idea who they are really, wasn't it a Ministry offshoot? Fairly unlikely to be replicated in the form it was. And the venue was not the very best if I look at it's components, but overall The Astoria was the site of so many fun times, and it's now gone, so it becomes a legendary venue, among the best.

Don't know if I still have the ticket, but I have a scan of it, and I found some things from music papers of the time too. The date on the ticket is wrong, as I have reported in other places, as the gig was postponed from its original date.

Of course there is the video of me stage diving at this gig (don't blink you will miss it), and now someone has put up the whole show. Isn't that worse quality than my bit though?

Also I know I was at another gig exactly thirty years ago, at the Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth. I just can't remember what it was, I only know I was there when other people I know where at Placebo at Southampton Joiners. I think it might have been Bush.

Still hard for me to look at the date and spot immediately that 1996 and 2001 and so on are pleasingly round date ranges from today. It was easier last year. Today in 2001 I don't seem to have been at anything but I wouldn't at all be surprised if I was back at the Astoria 1.

Sunny intervals and a moderate breeze, 6 - 8℃.

  1. Ah but no because I see the dates for the 2001 NME Brats gigs and they didn't start until January 29th.
