We had a great day in Broadstairs, and what bonus weather! We were just hoping for some respite from the forecast week of rain, but it was really hot, really lovely.
It's an hour on the train there, changing at Ramsgate. We walked down through the town and suddenly Broadstairs was familiar again. We haven't been enough to really know, but have been a few times now so round every corner there's something we half remember.
Sausage rolls for breakfast in the small bakery / cafe that either didn't have room for us, or had run out of sausage rolls. Coffee from the good but tiny Wave cafe. A walk past the restaurants we were considering for later - between Posillipo where we went last time, or Sardinia which was booked up. Hard choice.
We started our https://www.treasuretrails.co.uk/ and it was a bit trickier than the last one we did. We took a break to go in Sonder. I had seen this online, searching for real ale in Broadstairs, and it looked good. I went to save it in my "places I want to visit" list and it was already there as a favourite!! I had never heard of this place before. It's not all that spooky though, it used to be The Thirty Nine Steps, which I did like. Anyway we went in, and I had a real ale and Clare had a Floc beer she really liked. My beer was not quite right I think, maybe just on the turn. The boys got diet cokes and a huge bowl of mini eggs, they were happy. We played cards and plotted where to go next.
We did more of the treasure trail, and went on the beach. There was a lot on in town today, it was very busy in the afternoon. There was a funfair on the beach and up on the coastal path, and there was a brass band playing T2 went on a couple of fairground rides but no-one else.
Everywhere has a connection to Charles Dickens in Broadstairs, and the places that don't make a joke about it.
Loads of places everywhere have a connection to him, in Portsouth, in London, and in Folkestone. He did get about.
We went to the arcade, but only half-heartedly really. They got ice-creams and completed the treasure trail, and then we were heading to the highlight of the day for me, The Magnet. But it was too busy and we couldn't get in! We went back to Sonder, and this time I thought I'd try a half of a different real ale, not committing to a full pint in case, and I was right, this was disappointing too. I think they do everything else well but it's not the best place for real ale. So after more games of cards we found The Chapel, and this was good beer. It's sort of a book shop too, it is decorated with books and they're all for sale. We didn't have long in here before our dinner booking.
Dinner at Sardinia was great. I opened with a cocktail and bruschetta, and had some vegan pasta for a main. They did have vegan cheese, I could have had a pizza, but this was fine. T1 had pizza, T2 had the cannelloni special and Clare had penne arrabiata. At least he ordered the cannelloni special, but it was too cheesy for him so he swapped with Clare. After the restaurant, back to the train, another hour's ride home and then a taxi at the end. A lovely day out!
We watched that new comedy crime drama with Timothy Spall. He is in it, we did not watch it with him.
Sunny intervals and a fresh breeze, 12 - 16℃.
Estimated 2504 cups of coffee from my espresso machine 1 probably comes to £0.93 per cup (including 3+ years of coffee beans and servicing 1 but not the electricity).
