Blog2024 ≫ Two radiators automated

I bought a remote controlled thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) ages ago, hoping it would just plug into my home automation setup with no further hardware. It did not. However it did work as a non automated TRV, so nothing lost. Then we had need of another TRV. The boys rooms didn't have them, so no control of the temperature there. All fine when the heating never comes on, but now it's cold and the heating is kicking in their rooms need control. So time to look again.

I saw a bargain on a TRV and controlling hub combo 1 so gave it a go. Now, that link 1 at time of writing is not the good price! It was £27.99 when I bought it last week and it's back up to £37.99 today. £37.99 is a good price if you look back historically, and I do seem to have got lucky. But does it work?

TP-Link TRV

Yes, it works great! I had to plug the "hub" in, but it's a really low key piece of kit. Then I needed an app to set it up, turns out it's an app I used before to set up some remote controlled sockets. The good thing is you do not need the app beyond this setup stage, and it just appeared in my homeassistant dashboard right away.

So, pleased with this, got remote controlled radiators in two rooms, and will look at more after christmas.

One downside is that controlling these radiators doesn't control the actual heating, you can only control between "off" and "maximum amount of heat the radiator would do right now based on the heating", but that is normal for a TRV. We have Nest, and it doesn't play nicely with my home assistant, if that was better then I could possibly set it up so "if the TRV is turned up higher than the main thermostat, then turn the main thermostat up". Could get rid of Nest and get a real multi-zone heating system. But, for now, this does the job and it does it great.

Sunny and a moderate breeze, 6 - 9℃.
