Blog2023 ≫ RCS message

Something weird happened to my phone this week. Text messages with two friends suddenly changed from SMS messages (your normal texts) to RCS messages. This is some kind of standard for rich content messaging, to make normal text messages like Whatsapp, Signal, iphone imessage etc. Now it's a standard, but it's only being used by Android at the moment. Apple IPhone don't have an interest in opening up to this at the moment, they use imessage because it ties their users in to the platform.

Strangest thing of all is why did it suddenly appear now? This standard has been around for years. I wonder if I enabled something on my phone by mistake? If it's available to everyone it ought to be rolled out asap. I am thinking it means I can send pictures and so on, which I can't do via SMS at the moment.
