Blog โ‰ซ 2022 โ‰ซ There on the stair

Tuesday morning I noticed a slice of bread had been dragged out of our food waste bin and shredded. Probably not the kids. A mouse is back. Just the one? I put the trap1 out and baited it with some of my favourite cereal with bits of chocolate in. Yesterday the cereal was gone and the trap had been tipped over, but no little mousey fella in sight.

This morning, I'm up early. 5am to test something that is going live for work. So far I have found one thing to be broken that is not part of what I was meant to be testing, but good to spot it now. Someone else is putting something else live. The thing I'm meant to be testing has not gone live yet, probably because I've spotted a problem with with the other thing. Anyway there is a scurrying noise in the kitchen... yes, it is our little friend, caught in the trap this time. He looks quite big, I'm sure he's a mouse and not a big mouse though:

Little mouse I caught overnight, about to be released

I took him out across the road this morning and released him in the woods. I bet he was back in the house before I was...

As I'm up at 5am I do not have to go into London today. I was planning on getting up and going in early. Clare is still working from home2 so she can do school runs. I was going to get a 7am train, get free parking, maybe have a run in London. I don't need to now, though I could maybe still have made it if they'd got on with this release I'm meant to be testing.

Speaking of running I've done 193km so far this month, including another 10km yesterday, so I am quite likely to hit my 200km target today. Clare has nearly done her target too which means I will be paying 100% of her sponsorship money! Luckily it is pay day tomorrow, though a fair bit of that is now allocated.

Heard back from the blinds people, they could come and fit the blinds tomorrow afternoon. But no good, as Clare is back at work and I am at a funeral.

Thing one is going on a school trip to France in July. They're off to Boulogne to "practise their French, understand cultural differences, and visit the sea life centre".

Look at today's papers, see the contrast between what the more serious papers (and some of the less serious papers) say about Boris Johnson and co, and then those who seem to be hostage to him, The Daily Mail, The Daily Express, and The Sun. The Express hardly counts, but the other two are influential among their readership, and they absolutely parrot the new party line. It moved from "didn't happen", "rules were followed", "I wasn't there" to "It did happen, rules weren't followed, I was there, but let's move on", and it seems to be working for them. Makes me feel sick.

I have read some of the Sue Gray report. It is very long though. You don't have to get too far in before there are comments like "better than them focusing onour drinks (which we seem to have got away with)". They are laughing at us. They are at least going to have to try and buy people off with this windfall tax idea though, so we get a couple of hundred quid back. Still, got to vote them out though, it's all we have left.

This thing I got up at 5am for still has not gone live yet.

10k: Ten kilometres, about six miles in old money. Sometimes talking about 10,000 steps though, an arbitrary daily step count target.
