Some more thoughts from my trip away to Winchester at the weekend that I'm not sure if I mentioned. Obviously of no consequence at all, but I like looking back on these things. I found this write up of our Winchester trip eleven years ago and I wish I had that much detail for all the things. I don't but here's an attempt to fill in some gaps. Mostly inspired by pictures that I took.
- I went to try and take a picture outside the Sports Bar in Waterloo station, as Ro keeps telling me to go there and meet him there. But it seems to be gone, unless I was looking in the wrong place. I'm sure it's the top corner of the balcony of Waterloo.
- Winchester is quite nice isn't? No wonder it is one of the least affordable parts of the UK. It doesn't all look posh, there are some scrubby looking bits, but mostly it was lovely. The walk from the station to the hotel was fine and it brought back memories of previous trips.
- My room in the Wykeham Arms was really nice. I thought I paid a bit over the odds, I would have gone for a much cheaper option if it was available, but bit the bullet on this one. It had a view over something or other, not actually the cathedral, but something, it was called "chapel view". Probably the posh school that is right there and the chapel within that. It had a bath actually in the room, but luckily a separate en-suite bathroom too, as as it turns out I was sharing the room with Dave. He decided to stay and didn't have a room and did I fancy sharing to save some money? Yes please, and saved me about £100.
- The pub called The Black Boy has all sorts of taxidermy in it. I think I mentioned this before, but there was a wild boar under the table football table and the top half of a giraffe in one of the bars.
- There was a Landrover Defender parked outside that pub that had been converted into a camper van with a pop top roof. Don't see many of those.
- Winchester really is nice isn't it?
- My inclusive breakfast the next day had vegan sausage, spinach, tomato, field mushrooms, home made hash brown (in a proper cheffy cube shape), beans, and scrambled tofu. Really nice!
- Pretty soon after that, when I'd got to London I had an Ethiopean feast too in the food market that was on. I fancied the look of the Ethiopean places in Leather Lane market near work, so now am confident to give it a go for lunch. It was all vegan and made up of a mix of stews and salads, with a rolled up flat bread.
Just been out for a lunchtime walk, it is roasting again here today. Lots of people on the beach and in the sea, more of the retirement age people now though as everyone else is back at school and work. I saw one couple on electric recumbent bikes too, not seen one of those before. Looks quite a relaxed way to travel.
