Had to keep this on the down-low as it was a surprise for a friend's fiftieth birthday, but I have been to Winchester. Straight after parkrun on Saturday morning I got the train to Winchester, via London. Clare working, boys going to grandpa's for the weekend, daddy out on the lash. London was quite busy, tube issues by the looks too, platforms very crowded. I got out at Covent Garden to buy myself some new trousers and walked on to Waterloo from there. Train journey there quite relaxed really.
I walked straigh to the hotel I had booked, which is really a pub, a great pub, The Wykeham Arms. It was one I remembered from a previous trip to Winchester, and it was lovely, proper old and characterful. I had a shower and then a stroll around the town while waiting for friends to arrive.
Andy was first and we went to The Black Boy, which is also awesome. Full of strange taxidermy, must be a nightmare to dust that place. Nice garden too, we sat and had a couple of beers and headed back to The Wykeham Arms to meet two more. We chatted more, we drank more, and we went to the restaurant to meet the birthday boy, though it turns out there was not a plan for us to actually eat there, bit of a mix up. We couldn't get in as it goes, so we all went to The Old Vine for a few more, and much reminiscing. Had a really great evening. We ended up at the kebab shop, not too late, so I did get to eat in the end.
Today had a lovely stroll through London on the way back, was very very hot though.
