Blog2020 ≫ Wifi problems still

There are many moving parts on my home internets (when I say wifi I do mean the whole home internet setup, when some of it is actually ethernet). It's hard to diagnose what the problem might be but it's consistently improved by switching from wifi (so going from my phone, to the Huawei router, to Three 4G via my https://pi-hole.net DNS), to data (so going from my phone direct to Virgin 4G). I have a cheap mobile account so I can't use this often, and I can't use it for TV or anything, which is using ethernet to the a switch / hub, then ethernet to the Huawei router, to Three 4G via my https://pi-hole.net DNS.

I'm going to start logging the changes I make here, to see what improves it. Easiest thing to swap out first is the pi-hole, so even though I'm sure it's not that (I can disable it and things do not improve) I'm going to remove that for a day. First however I'm going to reenable the 5GHZ wifi in the house, see what that does. This is the least disruptive, but also least likely to make a difference. My phone doesn't use 5GHZ and neither do any of the things going directly by ethernet, but as it is a setting on the router it's worth a go.

The next changes are going to be more disruptive and more expensive. Probably the solution is to swap out the Three sim card in the router for another one, but as I'm on a year's contract that will involve double paying for internet. My bill at the moment is £20 a month, so very low, but getting another unlimited data sim card will involve paying that much again and not being able to get this back. If I do swap this out and it fixes it though I could complain loudly back to Three.

Not much else going on today. Clare is running now, then doing a pump class. I have a click and collect from Sainsbury's later, and lots of washing of uniforms so the boy has clean stuff for each of the four days he is in this week.
