Blog2020 ≫ New project / coding / game idea

Weather even better today, 10° - 20°. I just know the kids are going to suggest they don't have to go out for any outdoor exercise today. As it's a bank holiday the normal schedule is off. No school work and they're playing a game on their tablets already, which gives me an idea...

While I've been looking at SVG again today I got the idea it can be easily animated, and if I can animate it based on a key you pressed then I've got the beginnings of a game. And unlike a game like popex, this might be a game the boys could engage with! It won't be as good as their tablet games but maybe if I did something and they could give me some encouragement that would make me learn and do more and maybe I could make something that was more generall popular. Let's see. My first lightbulb moment here is that because you draw everything by coordinates in an SVG and you define a "view box" that can be smaller than the things you have drawn AND you can change any of these coordinates or the viewbox dynamically, then I can use this to easily make a scrolling type game. Mario style, the character is running to the right and jumping over things. I can do this by actually moving the character to the right and just moving the view box with the character. It will all make sense when I do it. I'm going to get the boys to design a character and then we'll try and build it together.

I hope you chainsawed right through the VE Day two minutes silence like one of our neighbours did.
