Blog2020 ≫ I seem to be rebuilding popex

Following the success of the popbitch thing1, how easy it was to get it out to production, I was thinking of trying with popex too. And in about three hours yesterday I got a version running. I have made it look like the oldest version of popex I can find which is from the 1990s, though it's all shiney modern tech under the covers. This is what it looked like when it was running on a PC under my desk, though I think it was hosted at ukshells by the time of that screen grab. I'll add another screenshot of how it's looking now.

It's a bit perverse of me to build it looking like this, it had two proper redesigns, the second one by Whiz was the best and most popular and I might just make it look like that before I get anyone else trying to play it. It's working now, you can buy and sell, though for further larks I only added bands from the 1990s too. Would probably have to change that to put your Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande and whatever on there. I would say it's 90% done, but that's one of those things, it means 90% of the work is still to be done. I still have not remembered the main game mechanics, how the prices change or dividends are paid out. Hopefully I'll get there before I have to go back to real work.

Popbitch is hosted on AWS (like this site is but on more expensive versions of it) but I'm wondering about trying to run popex for real players from a raspberry pi in the house. Probably another terrible idea to add to all my other terrible ideas.

Also I started a new book, but am spending most of my spare time in front of the computer.

Author Book Thoughts
Ian Rankin Westwind2 Dated thriller, shame.
Ian Rankin Doors Open2 Really good crime caper in Edinburgh but with no Rebus.
Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games2 Borrowed from the children, very good.
Suzanne Collins Catching Fire2 Hunger Games part 2, read this even quicker, a bit darker.
Suzanne Collins Mockingjay2 Hunger Games part 3, joyless and grim.
Karen McManus One Of Us Is Lying3 Another one liberated from the children's bookshelf. A Breakfast Club whodunnit I think.

Joe Wicks workout was different today, he's broken his wrist and had complications so his wife Rosie Wicks did the class. I liked it... We did a fitness test that we were meant to have recorded four weeks ago and measured the difference. We did not that time but here's how we got on this time. One minute each of:

Who Squats Press-Ups Burpees
Me 54 29 15
Thing 1 66 39 29
Thing 2 61 29 15

Don't read too much into that, but we might revisit in four weeks see if we got any fitter.

We're very close to moving into second place in the death charts. Can they really be thinking of sending the year sixes back to school in a month?
