Lightbulb moment, or should that be led moment it just came to me why my adafruit powerboost experiments were failing, it must be because I don't have a common ground between the adafruit powerboost and the raspberry pi. If it's only this then it's going to be great. But not sure when I'll get the chance to try this out. Maybe tonight.
When I have this I'll be able to tell on my battery powered raspberry pi what the power level is (ie is it also plugged into the mains right now) and what the battery level is (is the battery running low). This is the kind of thing your phone already does, so if you try and start a big system update or download when you're not plugged into the mains it'll stop you because it knows these things are going to drain the battery.
