Blog2016 ≫ Google broke my home automation

My home automation broke in quite a subtle way this week. It uses google calendar for timed events, I updated the timings of my christmas tree and it stopped working. Turns out google changed the urls of private calendars, or the domain at least, from www.google.com/calendar to calendar.google.com (or the other way round) and my code didn't pick up the 301 redirect correctly. Most of my events carried on as normal, just the new ones didn't pick up. Confused me.

Oh also my balcony lights have broken! Just in time for christmas. They were a bit flakey, I gave them a wiggle and a connection has broken. It's a very small connection, four wires in a very small gap, are my eyesight and soldering skills up to it? Also the lights are fixed to the balcony so I have to go outside to do it... Might just get new better lights.
