Instead of kicking it and cursing any more I finally phoned up to get our tumble dryer fixed. Was speaking to our neighbours who'd had local repairers Fullick (part of Euronics) in to fix their washer, so they inspired me. He's been today, taken it apart, found the fan to be a bit clogged up, cleaned it out, put it all back together and all seems good so far. I'm on a roll, what should I get fixed next?

Number one son has gone back to school for the second night of his school play, so picking him up soon. number two son had the second performance of his today, and this time he didn't fall over, or at least there were no reports of it.
