I have configured two of my raspberry pis (raspberries pi?) this way now. It won't work on my macbook, my work laptop, but I have Mum's old computer that I put Debian on ages ago and I use for music and it works just great from there. Take the sd card out of the raspberry pi and plug it into the laptop and I'm just straight on to the file system...
