Blog2015 ≫ DIY "Ambilight" from any video source

This is very nice1, ambient lighting for your TV, using your raspberry pi and a strip of led lights. I've seen the previous version, that relies on the video being played from the raspberry pi, but this newer version is awesome. You split the feed from your source (humax box or blu-ray player in our case) then feed one of the outputs of the splitter into the TV as normal and one into a video capture dongle attached to your pi. This then does live processing of the image and works out what colours to show.

This is a different ambient light system, but similar, see it compared side to side with the Philips official ambilight system:
