CEC stands for Consumer Electronics Control1. Since the Eden release XBMC comes with the new libCEC 2.1.3 which allows control of the XBMC interface over the standard TV remote that comes with your TV. As buttons are pressed the remote command is sent via the HDMI cable to your XBMC device. CEC allows for control of devices over the HDMI port, which allows for things like:
Automatically switch to the right TV input device
letting the HTPC control what mode your audio receiver is on when the TV switches on
Turning all devices off with one remote
and a lot more!
One of my raspberry pi's is an openelec XMBC media server right now.
UPDATE: Our new TV2 does support CEC (though it is called Viera link in this case, so I can control the raspberry pi with the TV remote, no need for the phone app or to have a keyboard plugged in. Now to check if the humax can do the same thing, if so I can get rid of the Harmony One.
raspberry pi: Credit card sized super cheap computer, awesome.
xbmc: XBox Media Centre, some code that would run on an old xbox or other computer hardware to play movies + music etc. I used to talk about this a lot...
