Did a super rare night out last night, to see The Magic Numbers at Revelation St Mary's in Ashford. We bought the tickets a long time ago so the gig kind of caught me by surprise; talking about the weekend at work on Friday I didn't think I was up to much. But I was! Out! At night! Without children!

We headed out after putting number two son to bed, but we left Number one son up with Auntie Jen, playing games and going to bed slightly later than normal. Drove into Ashford and was pleasantly surprised to find free parking. The venue is an actual church in the centre of town, not the deconsecrated conversion I was expecting. It's all seated, and was sold out, so being a bit late we ended up with slightly duff seats - second row on the end, so peering round a pillar... We could have shifted upstairs but decided to stick with them.

Goldheard Assembly supported, not seen them before (unsurprising, not seen anyone in about ten years) but they were ace. A two piece all fabulous harmonies, a good match for the Magic Numbers. They're the kind of band Dermot O'Leary has on his Saturday afternoon show. Well recommended.

The Magic Numbers too were excellent. It was billed as an acoustic show but it wasn't as stripped down as I thought it might be. The sound in the church was great, and being up so close we could pick all of the detail out of the performance. From where I was sat I mostly could not see Romeo, but that's OK, I know what he looks like. He seems to have got bigger since we saw them before, but maybe it was just being up close. The only other time we've seen them was at Royal Festival Hall in 2007. I have some video of that one, but did not bother this time.

Anyway, a very enjoyable gig. There was a bar, even though it's a church. Clare didn't drink so she could drive us home, but in the end Jim only had one so he drove back.

Fell asleep during Strictly Come Dancing when I got in.
