This is a magnetic door contact ¹, I've connected one to the Arduino ² and written some code so that it will send me a text when the door it's on is opened or closed. Now I just need to come up with some practical applications for this... I'm thinking so far:

monitor the bin shed door (let me know if the postman left a parcel there)
monitor the beer fridge, build up a pattern of when it is opened and closed and so when it really needs to be powered up
let me know when the tv / hifi cupboard has been opened, so I have a better idea why the tv stopped working...

let me know if Clare has left the fire doors propped open again Any other practical application suggestions appreciated.
