Just checked in with a Japanese colleague, he is still trying to get hold of his folks, hope things are all ok.

8.9 on the Richter scale means something like 50,000 times more powerful than the tremor that hit Folkestone that time I think (assuming I am right that one point ont he Richter scale means 10x magnitude).
