I am fascinated by holes in the road, not sure why, it's something about being able to see beneath the respectable veneer of the city. There's some work going on on Cannon Street1 right now, drains I think. Only about 2 feet below the tarmac of the road, you can see a big old layer of brick, looks like a roman road, but it could be Victorian I suppose. I'm telling you, there's tonnes of history round here. I hope the work's done soon (and the hole filled in again) as there's a stench like someone just cracked into plague pit all around that area.
