Tears before bedtime

(I think nme.com already used "Tears in Heaven")
So, I went to see last night, at Heaven nightclub at Charing Cross... you know what? It wasn't all that. I love , but never saw them live with , so the opportunity to see him reunited on stage with Brett Anderson at last was an opportunity and a half. The gig sold out in about fifteen minutes and you could smell the anticipation in the crowd.

There was a support, , and they were ace, a very spiky young English three piece, sounding a bit like the , with a lady bass player. See them, I'm sure they'll be everywhere next year, maybe you already saw them at Glastonbury. I didn't.

The first track from was great - could have been just the novelty of seeing them on stage together, or it could have been truly a great song. I don't know what it was called, but hopefully there's a setlist over on www.thetears.org... The reason I wasn't that enamoured with the whole performance was that it was so difficult to get a handle on it. When you hear a song for the first time and you like it, you want to hear it again. If you can't it's just ANNOYING! So with no material released before the gig, and no familiar songs at all, it's hard to think anything other than "that was alright"... I'll see them again and hopefully the material is really great. There were a couple of tracks that stood out as being quite epic, but also some that sounded like Brett's old cliched lyrics about gasoline in the streets and dogs running and that... maybe I misheard. I didn't mishear Bernard telling us that he was fucked, and he couldn't lie to us. He had a few tech problems, maybe it was down to him being a bit wobbly, but maybe that's just his style. When I've seen him with McAlmont and on his own he's had tech problems and made a show of being moody and kicking things about, so perhaps it's part of his show. Countering Bernard's bad cop routine, Brett was smiling brightly throughout.

I also didn't mishear many shouts for Suede songs, mostly "The Drowners" and "Animal Nitrate". No shouts from me, I promise. A few Suede covers would have improved the show, but it's up to the band whether they play old material or not. It looked and it smelled like a Suede reunion, but they're not on the Here and Now tour just yet. Brett responded with "no, you're at the wrong gig", and I think he might have been right.

Metal detectors on the way into the gig, the alarm went off for every single person, who then got a cursory patting down, finding nothing. What were they looking for? Didn't see any guns in the venue, but there were cameras and video cameras everywhere, and the show was being professionally recorded. Oh and Clare got ID'd, though she really stood out, most of the crowd were odd looking and ugly...

GLC + Darkness Review

Putting on a varied bill, is it a good thing or not? I was quite entertained by pop acts being thrown onto the Reading Bill, seeing Kevin Rowland in a neglige, was a particular treat. I've even seen the , so I've seen some bad crowd reactions in my time, but I don't think I've seen such a rejection from an audience as the received this weekend. The crowd were jeering and throwing stuff etc, but it was the air of "we don't know what it is, so we hate it" that annoyed me the most. No-one got it at all, and no-one was prepared to give them a chance... this was 's loss, and when the return, as heroes, as they hopefully will, everyone in that crowd will claim they loved it. I can hear the tide turning already.

This situation was probably to be expected, it's unfair on your average young metal fan of to take someone from a different genre out on tour with them, no-one expected this to be any sort of variety show. If I was more paranoid I'd think someone resented doing those gigs (this was rescheduled from a time when The Darkness weren't the biggest band in the world) and so put out first to say a big "fuck you" to the crowd. If I was less of a Darkness fan I'd say "novelty band supports novelty band", but hopefully it's neither of those, it's that someone in charge likes the GLC as much as I do and thought it would be fun, but it's fair to say Folkestone weren't ready for them. I wonder if they had any easier a time at Portsmouth?

were good also, no outing of the Christmas single, but all the hits, much play with the crowd, an impromptu walkabout in the crowd on someone's shoulders, and the traditionally delightful costumes. The "dipped in glue and chased through Anne Summers" look is very you Justin. Odd to see in the audience, I thought only London gigs had celebrity attendance.

Anyway, here's a picture of The Chain on stage. I'm too cross to write a proper review. If you can see your fingers here, be ashamed, be very ashamed.

GLC Folkestone

Hmm, now I think of it, didn't get such a dissimilar reaction from a generous proportion of the crowd when they supported ... what goes around comes around.

Hmm, you could also try

www.mrgig.com, they both seem to be mostly pub bands to me though. I would give whoever promotes the bands at Lanterns (that used to promote at ), that seems to be more the style of music, and they don't seem to bother with the other local band sites. Also, The Harp Club could be a goer.

www.onfolkestone.co.uk seems to have more of the young metal crowd gigs listed, hopefully this site will have the best listings of all.
