RE: Impressions of Tontine Street, a first visit to a new bar
Home
Went on a bit of a wander down Tontine Street and to the harbour and though I would report back on my findings! Check replies to this post for a roundup of each bar...

Was either of these buildings legendary Folkestone venue Tofts? I think I went to the right part of town...

Ended up at Chambers on Saturday night, terrible music going on there and a slightly creepy air about the place. Perhaps all the regulars were away at something else.
For the record, I like it indie, or rock, or folky, none of your pumping electronics, please.

Popped in The Earl Grey for one too on a bit of a crawl around town on Saturday evening, it's changed style a bit since I last went in there, it's very studenty indeed, though not menacing at all as it has been at points in the past.
The real beer seems to have gone, though that can only be temporary with it being a Shepherd Neame.

Went to Euphoria on Saturday afternoong, which is where The Nostalgia Bar was, which is where The Front was before that. Now the '50s theme has been dropped, and it's just a nice bar again, nice to sit outside anyway, the high energy happy hardcore young people's dance music they were playing in the bar was a bit offputting.
We returned to the scene of the crime that evening, but didn't go inside, there seemed to be more people working security on the door than drinking inside, don't know what sort of trouble they were expecting.

Other bar news discovered while we were out... The Ship down at the harbour has a pool table, a jukebox, and live music. It's a nice pub, just my type, though you might feel it's a bit of a low dive. Can't believe I'd not been in there before.

Heard there was a new bar in town, Impressions, and so there is, it's at 33 Tontine Street, opposite Pipers, where a curry house used to be. It is a bar bistro, and looks like it's open daytimes too, though we didn't go in until the evening. Got there about 8.30 or 9pm maybe, and though the sign says open it was hard to be sure. It's a very bright bar, far too bright, need to dim those lights down a lot. It's still mostly laid out as a curry house would be, with little booth type tables to the rear, but with a more open bar area to the front. Not a lot in the way of draft beer, they're obviously not aiming at that market, just Amstel and some other lager at £2.70 a pint.
We were the only customers in the place for the whole time (one pint) that we were there, and now I'm starting to think that it wasn't really open at all, and the staff were just too polite to tell us. One member of staff was sat in the middle of the floor scrubbing like Lady Macbeth at some imagined spot. This was weird, but if the bar wasn't really open, then it was OK. Located where it is I'd have thought it's a bit of a club feeder type bar (a bar that people go to before heading to the nearby clubs I mean, not a bar where people go to feed each other), and we probably won't go again, but if you go to Impressions, please report back on how it was!

I visited this 'hidden jewel'. Why is it so quiet? The food was excellent, service great and the staff welcoming and friendly. Maybe Folkestone or Tontine St is not ready for this yet. Use it or lose it i say. What an excellent venue for the World Cup! As you say a good place for a drink or eat before club land. I will be back for the footie. I hope i am not crying alone! Give it a try.

ALSO, Pipers has had another refit, and at least a part of it is opening as if it was a new bar, called "The Pub". It will be a sports type bar, with big screens.
