Summer's here!

Make the most of it, it'll be gone again tomorrow... how can I get out of the office and enjoy some of it? I thought I'd made it when I got into work today and my computer is bust (I think THE MAN did it while monitoring me, a story for another day), this is a prime "work from home" opportunity. But no, there was a spare computer, well nearly, a spare Mac. It's the first time I've had a proper sit down go for more than half hour or so on OSX, and it's alright. I still think I will get another PC next, but these beasties are not bad at all. It's nice to really see for the first time for myself that it's all UNIX under the hood, this makes it more of a "real" computer than a PC to me.

Aargh, I'm undecided, what should I get?

RE: Summer's here!

These little macs are the business - we have a few at work - is software dear though? Or does a load come for free?

I think it's not cheap

AND I think there might be less freeware / open source type stuff out there, maybe I'm wrong there though. There would have been in the old days, but now it's all unix under the hood, who knows. Nic P surfed on by earlier to say that you do have to buy software for it :-(

I think I'm going to get another PC first, I don't want to be confusing the wife, she wants exactly the same setup she uses at work for when she needs to work from home.

RE: I think it's not cheap

naw, youd be right there. We had a couple of the flash G5 workstations at my previous works. Actually we have a couple of hundred at the new place. any way.
hardware for them is not cheap, and neither is software. There is a fair bit of open source around for them.
Having said that the mac mini you have pictured doesnt really require much upgrading on the hardware site of things, and if you turn of some of the flashy fading effects on the toolbar the gui pootles along at a reasonable rate.
Yor mac mini is probably a pritty good by from that point of view.
The new intel macs are supposed to be a lot quicker than the power series.
although I have to say I still can understand why apple would make something you can dualy boot the competetors OS on.

RE: I think it's not cheap

Having seen OSX in action, it sure is a pretty lil thang, but I would be tempted to went for an Intel version of a Mac so I could sneak in a Windows dual boot for when I got homesick.
