Anyone been made redundant before?

I have known it was coming for weeks but was really expecting to be paid off my super sized notice period - they want me to work it though. Damn, I have been putting off some work for the past couple of weeks thinking I wouldn't be around to see it through. Now I guess I do it, with as much professional pride as I can muster. Weird one.

Statutory redundancy pay really does seem to be only £290 for each year of service, which is what I'd get.

Just wanna stick my oar in and say "here's to pastures new!"... even if it is in a year or so.
Plenty of time to plan.

I hear there's an England Manager's job on offer around then.

Sorry to hear that matey - it's never good. Wait, does that mean you won't be the custodian of pooex anymore? It's the end of an era, I shall stop playing in memorial.

Anyway, I got laid off last xmas and got a stonking pay out, mainly because the parent company wanted me to go on garden leave for 2 months and then work for them. So I pocketed the cash (which is tax free btw) and never looked back.

Very nice

I will be getting statutory redundancy pay, which is not great. Better than a kick up the arse though.

Is there a lawyer in the house?

Pictures

No, I've been given 12 months notice of redundancy. I think.

What?? 12 months??? That's some contract, are you secretly a premiership footballer?

Yes, that's what I am!

No that's what I negotiated when I joined, under advisement from the place that sold me before. So I have a year to figure out what I'm going to do next, I always had the idea that they'd really not want me to hang around the office all that time and they'd pay me off instead. Ah well, at least it will be low pressure work for twelve months, though I could have done without trekking into the office every day.

Still, I'm seriously surprised they are getting rid of you unless you get an obscene amount of cash. I doubt anyone could run the Popex site like you do and you also do other webby stuff for the company.

Still got a lot to figure out in my head really... I have worked on just "fun" internet things for so long, I once thought that I only wanted to work on the music side of things, but it's a bit like a job in a sausage factory, no matter how much you liked sausages once you've seen it all from the insides you're put off a bit. Now I would gladly work at some grey and faceless corporation if the money was right, but I think my skills are best suited to the slightly quirkier side of the business.

I'm looking to do perhaps 50% of my time maintaining and updating 1970s code that no-one else can remember how to do, and the rest on fun projects for / with my friends. Maybe that's not realistic, we'll see.
