Super Furry Animals are to play a warm up show before their Glastonbury appearance on Friday 27th June at MS1, Cardiff. For further enquiries see www.ms1club.com...

The gig will follow the band’s first major headlining show of the year in Bethesda, Gwynedd, North Wales, on June 21st. The concert, subject to license, will occur in a 6500 capacity tent, to commemorate the centenary of the end of the Great Bethesda Quarry Strike 1900-03. The all-day event – for which the full line-up will be announced shortly – is part of a yearlong commemorative festival in Bethesda.

The Great Penrhyn Quarry Strike started on 22 November 1900 after Lord Penrhyn, the quarry owner, refused to let union officials collect contributions from members. It lasted three years and became Britain's longest strike. It was a landmark in the development of trade unionism, and was a defining experience for the labour movement in Wales. Thousands of men stayed away from work and many of them lost their jobs in the quarry. For more details about the strike The North Wales Quarrymen 1874 - 1922" by R. Merfyn Jones (University of Wales Press) is a good place to start.
