Was just reading this news story, which is just a puff piece for 1837online.com, which has lots of info, but you have to pay to access it... at the bottom of the news story there's a brief mention of a (births marriages and deaths) site, which I've found is freebmd.rootsweb.com (aka www.freebmd.org.uk... They have about 90% of the content of 1837 online, and it's all free!

I wouldn't go to freebmd.com, it only has sponsored links to other sites, not the free stuff that rootsweb has above!

The site is supported by The Bunker, who also host www.popbitch.com, I know them, small world...

I've not paid or anything, but it looks like 1837online.com has only scanned in documents, not transcribed.

1837 Online

Friday afternoon, purchased 55 credits to use the site, searching for my Grandfather's 1903 marriage. Wasted 5 credits by being shown either blank pages or a printed index page which disappeared after 1-2 seconds. Tried again Sunday morning and wasted another 5 credits, as each time I clicked on 1903, I was shown pages clearly dated 1908! Are these people having a laugh or what? Seems like daylight robbery to me! Perhaps I should try 1908 and maybe I'd get 1903?

Re:pauly's comment - "only scanned in documents, not transcribed"

Transcribing the documents is in many cases not a realistic option since the originals are hand-written and can be extremely hard to read. Any transcription would be highly error-prone. Although it makes the genealogical researcher's job harder, it's preferable to let people read the hand-writing for themselves.

1837 online costs a lot if you are looking for a fairly common surname. You can spend such a lot of money without actually achieving anything! Why should we have to pay to know about our heritage?

then you get the same problem as with most "for profit" genealogy resources

You have to pay before you know if there's anything relevant to your family, don't you?

FreeBMD is a great free resource. It does not only have links to pay sites as one person said, but has a searcheable database of the BMD transcriptions. It is a volunteer project and will take some time to complete, but is well worth it.

1837 only has scanned documents and no proper index and you have to pay.

I was talking about freebmd.com, not freebmd.rootsweb.com which is the one I think is brilliant
