Hi
My wife is trying to trace her father's tree. His name was Raymond Reynolds Clarke and he was put up for adoption in Winchester together with his brother Rex Edward and sister Violet.
Ray was born 12 October 1916 - his birth certificate shows no father, mother's name Bertha Ruth Clarke with no address.
As beginners in ancestor sleuthing, we'd appreciate suggestions on directions to search.
Many thanks
Dirk

I am quoting from "Tracing your Ancestors in the Public Records Office" by Amanda Bevan

Page 40 3a.4. Adoptions. Before 1927 there was no official system of Adoption and it is usually extremely difficult to trace private arrangements. Some charities, such as Bernardos, arranged Adoptions and may conduct searches for a fee. Certificates of any Adoption in England & Wales since January 1927 may be obtained from the FRC. They show the date of the adoption, the name of the child adopted, and the full name and address of the adoptive parents. The FRC has booklets available at the downstairs enquiry desk on access to Birth Records. The adoption Contact Register and Information for Adopted Oeople and their Relatives.
