I HAVE WHAT IS KNOWN AS A "DEAD MANS PENNY." THAT IS A MEDAL AWARDED FOR BRAVERY IN THE 1914-1918 WAR. IT IS TO ACTING CORPORAL WHITMORE CLARKE WHO WAS WITH THE HAMPSHIRE REGIMENT.

ON THE 1901 CENSUS THEIR IS A WHITMORE CLARKE BORN IN SEDGLY STAFFORDSHIRE. DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS THE SAME ONE. THIS WAS FOUND IN CORNWALL, DO NOT KNOW HOW-WHEN OR WHY.!

On the CWGC Site, Corporal Whitmore Clarke Service No 11788 of the 2nd Bn Hampshire Regiment is listed as age 25. He died on 13 Aug 1915 and his name is on the Helles Memorial in Turkey. His parents were Mr & Mrs W H W Clarke of Salford Rd Bidford-on-Avon Warwickshire

I have a DEAD MANS PENNY that I found some years ago, my great grandfather was a Clarke and he had 10 brothers all of whom served in the war, they lived in Copford, Colchester, my penny has the name ROBERT CLARKE, could you tell me how to find out when he died?

Hi Sue,
They were issued in the 1st world war(a total of 1355).Try the CWGC web site. There are five Robert Clarke's all killed in 1915.One was an Able Seaman the rest were all Privates. The link is www.cwgc.org. There are thousands of Clarke's listed between both wars.
