The Ship

Had a dreadful dinner at a pub on the way to Dungeness, The Ship in Romney Marsh. It wasn't meant to be a high-falutin' fancy gourmet extravaganza, but it was meant to fill a gap, and it failed in this meagre task.

Maybe they were busy, so we could let it slide that it took them an hour to bring us two plates of chili, a burger, a ploughmans, and a baked potato with beans (the only vegan thing I could make off the menu), but the food we got was very poor. One of the chilis was clearly the last burnt scrapings of the pan, it shouldn't have been let out of the kitchen, and the other one (which looked OK) was not good, and left uneaten. My potato was shrunken to the size of a golf ball, I guess through being microwaved to much. We got a refund, but no apology or alternative, and were left hungry.

Bizarrely someone here claims "i had one of the nicest meals of my life", but then on the same page someone claims to have encountered a ghost there, equally as likely I suppose.

The pub itself was nice, I had a good pint of 6X, and the place is decorated with artwork related to the Doctor Syn novels, which were written by Russell Thorndike in that very pub. So, a nice drink, and a bit of history, but I would recommend you get some crisps before you go in.

Bad experience aswell

We stopped off at The Ship Inn, Dymchurch on our way home from a lovely dayout and we had our two children aged 3 and 5 with us, we were told that the good would be about 30 minute wait, so we ordered our food and went into the garden for the children to play, 55 minutes later we were still waiting for our food, so I went into the bar, she retook down what I had ordered and came back saying that it would be another 10 to 20 minutes, so went back outside, with the children asking where there food was, the time being 8.25pm.

At 8.45pm the barmaid came out to say they had no ham for the childrens ham and chips, so showing they had made no effort to make our food, At 9 o'ckock our food finally came, minus my husbands dinner, so they checked and bought that out, his rice was tastless and stodgy and the childrens chips tasted like they had been fried with fish, so we were not happy with our meal, what we having to eat in the dark, and unfortunately we had no offer of a refund, so regardless to say if we are ever in that area again we shall not be going anywhere near that pub or recommending it to any friends.

Defending The Ship!

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience at the Ship. I've eaten there many many times and had great food, especially the fish and chips - always the biggest piece of fhish you can imagine and fresh chunky chips.

I can also heartily recommend the steak and kidney pudding.

It's great that pubs like this still exist, I dread the day when every local is replaced my souless, stale All Bar Ones.

Shame no apology was offered for your dining experience but at least a refund was given.
