I am fascinated by holes in the road, not sure why, it's something about being able to see beneath the respectable veneer of the city. There's some work going on on Cannon Street right now, drains I think. Only about 2 feet below the tarmac of the road, you can see a big old layer of brick, looks like a roman road, but it could be Victorian I suppose. I'm telling you, there's tonnes of history round here. I hope the work's done soon (and the hole filled in again) as there's a stench like someone just cracked into plague pit all around that area.
My last Monday evening as a single man was spent ripping tunes onto Clare's new IPOD and watching The West Wing, series three.

I cycle past there on my way home... is it the works going on opposite? There's some crazy street markings going on around it, I wonder what they're going to do to it? will have a closer look down into the hole when I go past tonght.
btw. have you read Peter Ackroyd. London, The Biography? It's really good

But that sounds about the place, it's right outside Pret a Manger, is that the one? It's near that road that is stopped off with big concrete blocks.
Yes read that biography of London, I like Edward Rutherfurd's London novel too.
I will look out for you on your bike, is it the one with the big cow horn handlebars?

That's the one. Not bang opp. the station, a little bit west.
Will check out Edward Rutherfords london... I liked Ackroyd's one but he romanticised the city a bit much (street lammps dancing in the night-time etc.)
Re. my bike, it's actually a brompton... little fold away number, I take it on the train and unfold it at Fenchurch Street. Take a look at them if your walk is getting a bit much of a hassle.
Oh and all the best to you and your Bride on Saturday : ) have a BLUDDY GRATE day

1. Related point - Bricks eh? are you sure it's not the vault of a victorian sewer? That would explain the pong, possibly coming through a crack in the brickwerk
2. Less related point - I just had a samosa that tasted a bit of vinegar - it was not unpleasant, but what was that about then eh?
I think we should be told

But I could see the layers of brick in cross section, and there was more "solid" beneath them. I hope it wasn't ALL shit, though that would explain the whiff.

I can see about ten courses of old brickwork, and then it's silt below that, so not sure what it is, I think it's an old road.
