The Cure review

Unbelievably, we got into The Cure last night at Barfly Camden, and here is my review... This was the Music Passport charity show, a privileged audience of about 200 competition winners and successful ebay bidders, and then a handful of people like us.

The gig was amazingly not the most crowded Any of us had seen the Barfly, and if the rumours were right that the Libertines were doing a show their at the club afterwards, I'd expect it to be busier for them. This is obviously not down to the popularity of the band, but just how difficult it was to get into this gig, I know one person paid nearly 3 grand for a pair of tickets.

Anyway, spectacular 2 hour set, we tried to keep a track on everything they played but there was just so much. As one of the bands less patient fans, I was very pleased they did all the upbeat numbers that I imagined they wouldn't, including THREE, count 'em, off the first album, "Boys Don't Cry", "10:15 Saturday Night" and "Fire in Cairo". Also, they played "A Forest", I like to think they knew that was my favourite.

Instead of going off to allow for an encore, Robert asked for questions from the audience, the first was "are you playing Glastonbury?" and shockingly he said NO! Not sure if he was serious, I think he said something about Glastonbury not inviting them back but it wasn't clear. He said they are doing some festivals this summer, though he didn't say UK festivals.

The ending was odd, maybe fans who've seen them live more would have been expecting it, but they got some chums (Frank and Porl apparently, you're right, I have no idea at all, apologies to Cure fans everwhere. Except the ones below) up to do a couple of numbers with them "I Dig You" and "I'm a Cult Hero", a bit of light relief that I wasn't expecting. The final song ("Friday I'm In Love", I think, though a bit hazy from the heat by this point) was marred for me by the attention seeking antics of a couple of weird fans at the front, one pretended to faint, but she was just conscious enough to not let security move her out of the crowd, she clearly was expecting to be taken backstage or something... Calm down dear, it's just the Barfly! Speaking of sad groupie behaviour, we possibly could have headed to the Enterprise for after show drinks, but thought there's no way the evening could get better.

Ace gig, how can tonight's Pet Shop Boys show at the same venue compare? Thanks to the generosity of a different friend this time, I'm on the winners list again...

Pauly, King of the Ligers

Once upon a time there was a little boy called Paul. He blagged his way onto Big Brother 2001 and met a girl called Helen. He was very happy. He realised that blagging was good. He endeavoured to never spend any money ever again. Now he lives in a castle made of gold and drives a Ferrari Testerossa and has five girlfriends, none of which are called Helen. He owns fourteen companies and the recording contracts of three bands. One of those bands is the Darkness. One of those bands is the Manics. And the other is Cure.
These ties and his overall monetary status enable him to blag his way into any gigs he likes. He also owns a monkey called Bobster who writes his reviews under the pseudonym Pauly.
This is all troo.
Believe me, I know what I'm talking about.
I am the second coming!
Woooooaaargh.
That is all.

so funny!

It's so funny how you act like the liger is talking. The liger picture you have is so can I get one?? And is that your ex-girlfriend cause this was made in 2004?

RE: Pauly, King of the Tigers

I am Italian: The correct spelling
should read FERRARI TESTAROSSA

Also to be politically correct, the Manics should now, in 2004, read " The Bi-polars "

Lo spelling ESATTO della vettura e della malattia psichiatrica e' molto importante ....

- Believe me, FERRARI TESTAROSSA. I know what I am talking about , too. Woooooaaaargh. That is all, egregio signore ~ cher monsieur !

RE: The Cure review

whilst im unsure if pauly would call himself a "true fan" he does like the cure, lots.. i think it was last year he was going on and on about seeing the cure but having to miss it because of a wedding or something.. so i think he deserved this, he puts a fair bit of work into the barfly. and has a bafta (dont ask ;o)

RE: The Cure review

neat.

you've managed to annoy a whole load of "twoo fans".

one of the things that I always enjoy about my privileged and lofty position in the music industry is watching the looks on the faces of those poor "twoo fans" as I waltz past their queue, and straight through the door. it's just a shame I missed it last week, as it always sets up my night nicely for me.

i've often wondered whether fans are a subspecies of home sapiens, as they don't always seem to be sentient, by which I mean, of course, that they often seem to be unaware of themselves. perhaps the old mirror test for vampires could be recycled for fans. hold it up and see if they recognise anything...

[waves to fans]

RE: The Cure review

Well. what can I say about this? This is the sort of person who takes the place as a special gig instead of a true fan. The blokes a total liger. It really annoys me and for him to assume Sue fainted to get back stage? well from where I was standing, Sue you didn't look like you did it on purpose. If I can find that blokes e-mail address I think I will tell him to FUCK OFF! I'm normally a nice person but this really pissed me off. What a wanker. Chris WHite

FROM THE OTHER "WEIRD FAN" SEEKING ATTENTION AT THE FRONT :I cant believe this review, I had friends stood outside who would have killed for the chance to get into this gig, I"M APPAULLED, it was my friend who fainted at the end, i ran over to keep her held up until the end as we HAD STOOD OUTSIDE FOR 4 HOURS and spent lots of text messages an did didnt want her to miss the end, she knows the band anyway so why would she do this to get backstage. Fuck youve annoyed me!!! I laugh at your knowledge of porl and frank, road crew?? we can do without people like you following the cure, maybe you should stick to the psb maybe you know a little about them???? angela birtwell

RE: The Cure review

do you mean a 'ligger'?

a liger is a cross between a tiger and a lion. them Scientists made one, specially, and everything. them Scientists are DEDD CLEVVER!

i want to be one of them Scientists when i am an grown up.

if pauly is a liger, i want to stroke his fur and feed him...ooh no, i don't want to feed him. ligers eat horrible MEAT stuff. no self respecting cure fan would eat MEAT, surely?

but perhaps if he isn't a REEL HARD-CORE fan, he might be a liger.

purr, little liger, purr..

The Cure

Hello, just to remind everyone that here is a The Cure Review (with some pictures, more pictures and possibly video coming soon when I get them off the camera).

I don't claim to be the world's biggest cure fan. Well, I did last week, but that was just so as to get me and Mrs Pauly in. I enjoyed the show very much, I did a little work on this whole Music Passport charity project, and I put some money in the bucket.

Also here is a picture of a baby liger isn't it cute?

Ligers

Also stellastarr*, one of my favourites, recently played a secret ny2lon.com gig under the name The Ligers. Everyone pronounced it liggers, but I've seen the posters, it definitely said ligers.

RE: The Cure review

Hi
Would just like to say in response to the review i've just read by "Pauly" that it was an absolutely amazing gig to which i will probably never be so fortunate to attend anything of similar size again. I WAS THE SO CALLED WEIRD GIRL WHO PRETENDED TO FAINT. ONLY a complete utter imbecile would have not been able to see that i was NOT faking anything as I AM NOT THAT SAD!!!!!!!!! Which obviously this utter numbskull is for thinking such a thing especially knowing how hot it was in there themselves! I was glad after the show that the audience hadn't contained any idiots that often manage to spoil cure shows for a few unfortunate individuals, but obviously i was mistaken, as there was at least one. Not even gutsy enough to say their unfounded whinings to my face. As for being attention seeking then i think your review has drawn more attention to you than i did on the night. WHO'S PORL*???*!.... Er, DIME BAR, as a TRUE CURE FAN you'd know he was. So as a handy hint PAL, get ALL your facts straight before attempting to scrawl a review!!!!!
8 Mar TweetComment / reply

Yeah shes rite

Pauly yoo r ovbiously a div who knows nothing about nothing and Bob Smithie (as his true fans call him) would spat on u crossing the stree to get away from your smelliness. So there.

RE: The Cure review

right on! pauly obviously doesn't know anything about the cure or cure fans... seriously pauly, do a LITTLE research before you post a "review"... what a joke. it's people like you who did NOT deserve to be at the barfly. i had several friends outside who could not get in b/c of people like you "stealing" their tickets.
