Blog2020 ≫ IKEA Tradfri scenes good, but...

Set up my first "scene" on the IKEA Tradri home automation. Every evening when we sit down to watch TV I have to turn the lights off in other rooms, turn the main lounge lights off and turn the lamps behind us on. Low lamp level for me so it's not distracting, but up higher on Clare's side so she can keep playing minesweeper throughout everything we watch. Now it's all one button on my phone, and I can even get a special physical button that is dedicated to this one purpose. I'll stick it to the side of the sofa, or the underside of the table there or something, so I don't even have to get my phoneout, or say "hey Google set the tv scene... no not turn the tv green, no not play James Brown sex machine, aargh google turn everything off again".

In setting this scene the IKEA app said my bulbs in the study were inaccessible, so I reset them just to try and get everything in sync. They were actually working for me, I have a remote control for the study and all was good though the PIR motion sensor wasn't working, so maybe that's it. On resetting everything in that room I can't set it up again. I can add the remote control to the room, and all is good. Then I can add the first bulb, it responds to the remote control and appears on the app, so it'll also work with the Google Home. Then the second bulb responds to the remote control only, but won't appear on the app / network / google home. Then the third bulb won't pair with either. I am thinking it's either related to the update of the app that adds in the new "scene" options, or it's struggling because I have forty or so bulbs connected now. I hope they can fix it with another software update, as right now I've gone back to old style clicky switch at the wall, and it is most unsatisfactory. Much as I am unimpressed with the finish of this switch cover1 it did at least make it easy to click off the new IKEA switch exposing the old switch. If this happens in our room I've hardwired the existing lighting and removed the switch completely, so I won't be messing with that...

Glad my parcel arrived at Mum and Dad's. If I'd thought about it I could have sent one nephew's gift direct to him as he is stuck in York for the duration.

Might go and see the alternative christmas lights, all the lorries queued up on the M20.
