I used to do Clerkenwell - Cannon Street and it's pretty easy - 521 bus from Chancery Lane tube / Holborn Viaduct, or failing that, I think a 17 does it too.
It's walkable as well, and Moorgate station is only 10 mins (brisk!) walk from Cannon Stret.
Failing that, there's always buses (243, 341) that go to/from Waterloo East to that neck of the woods.
